May 2, 2025 – In 2021, El Paso County performed a safety analysis of Furrow Road between Highway 105 and Higby Road that included the connection at Lamplight Drive/Minglewood Trail, in unincorporated northern El Paso County. The analysis provided recommendations for long-term safety improvements along this corridor. To support and encourage safety, the County determined that Furrow Road would not be open to thru traffic until safety improvements were made.
In November 2024, the existing roadway between Higby Road and Highway 105 was striped to establish 11-foot travel lanes and create a 3-foot buffer zone and additional traffic signs were installed to guide current and future road users. This interim safety plan enabled the County to open Furrow Road from Hwy 105 to Higby Road while maintaining overall traffic operations and safety along the corridor.
The County has monitored the traffic speeds and volumes and observed that the current improvements are working well. As such, the County will reconstruct Furrow Road between Minglewood Trail (north) and Lamplight Drive/Minglewood Trail and provide 11-foot travel lanes and a separate 6-foot-wide non-motorized facility on the west side of Furrow Road. This approach optimizes safety, mobility, and financial needs.
The reconstruction and reconfiguration of Furrow Road will piggyback on the overall need for road rehabilitation and is expected to be funded through the PPRTA maintenance program and supplemented by PPRTA-3 Safety and Multimodal Program. Both the reconstruction and reconfiguration are anticipated to be completed in 2025.
