El Paso County, Colorado, February 16, 2023 – Starting on February 20, El Paso County Department of Public Works Contractor, Sturgeon Electric, will begin intersection improvements at Main St. and Security Blvd. Sturgeon crews will begin work on the second location, Security/Widefield Blvd. and Fontaine Blvd., beginning on March 20. The schedule is weather dependent and could change.

Work at each of these intersections will include the removal of the existing signals and associated equipment, installation of updated traffic signal equipment, poles, mast arms, pedestrian push buttons, closed-circuit television, construction of new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant pedestrian facilities, signing and pavement markings and vehicle detection upgrades.

Traffic signals are a vital part of controlling traffic in a safe and efficient manner. They provide regulated vehicle and pedestrian movement through intersections. The proposed vehicle detection will reduce unnecessary delays and stops at the intersections while improving travel times and increasing the amount of traffic that an intersection can handle.

Other benefits of the project include the installation of ADA compliant curb ramps at each intersection. The new ramps will be in compliance with the Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines requirements. These improvements will provide functional accessibility to all travelers using these intersections.

Typical work hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorists and pedestrians should plan for shoulder closures, single lane closures, sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours. Business access will be maintained throughout the project. The anticipated completion date is Fall 2023.
