November 14, 2024 – El Paso County will host an informational virtual meeting via Microsoft Teams on November 19, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to inform residents about safety improvements coming to Furrow Road.
All residents who would like to attend may do so by registering using the following link:
In 2021, El Paso County performed a safety analysis of Furrow Road between Highway 105 and Higby Road that included the recently constructed connection at Lamplight Drive/Minglewood Trail, in unincorporated northern El Paso County. The analysis provided recommendations for long-term safety improvements along this corridor. To support and encourage safety, the County determined that Furrow Road would not be opened to through-traffic until safety improvements were made.
In the time since, the County has further researched design options that optimize safety, mobility, and financial needs. The ultimate roadway design will feature 11-foot travel lanes and a separate 6-foot-wide non-motorized facility on the west side of Furrow Road. Traffic circles will be constructed at key intersections along Furrow Road, between Hwy 105 and the Lamplight/ Minglewood intersection, to enhance traffic flow and promote safer speeds.
These improvements are expected to be funded through the PPRTA-3 Safety and Multimodal Program and are anticipated to be completed and road opened to traffic sometime in 2025.
Recently there has been an increase in demand for additional travel route options through this area. In preparation for the ultimate improvements, El Paso County will implement interim safety measures that reflect the principles used in designing the permanent improvements mentioned above.
These interim measures include striping the existing roadway between Higby Road and Highway 105, to establish 11-foot travel lanes and create a 3-foot buffer zone and install additional traffic signs to guide current and future road users.
This interim safety plan will enable El Paso County to safely connect Furrow Road from Hwy 105 to Higby Road while maintaining overall traffic operations and safety along the corridor.
