Why are we collecting this data?

When our employees are valued in the workplace, they can truly take care of our community. El Paso County is consistently seeking ways to remain an employer of choice so our employees can passionately give their best to our residents and visitors.

According to the National Association of Counties (NACo), “If staff are fully engaged in their jobs, then they will put in the extra effort needed to provide the best services possible…The difference in work quality for engaged and disengaged employees is not trivial.”

What data is being examined, and what metric is being calculated?

Our Employee Engagement Index, collected through a survey conducted every two years, gives us valuable insights into how our workforce feels about their roles, leadership, and growth opportunities. With questions focused on feeling valued, connecting work to purpose, trust in leadership, and career development, this index reflects how well we’re supporting our employees as they serve the public. The data is then compiled and summarized into percent averages, offering valuable insights into how valued, connected, and supported employees feel.

How is the data being used in support of our objective?

In the most recent survey, 70% of employees reported feeling valued in their roles, and 90% saw a clear connection between their work and the County’s purpose. This strong sense of alignment with purpose is vital, as it motivates our workforce to take pride in their contributions to community well-being. However, areas like career growth (with 62% satisfaction) and trust in leadership (at 69%) show that there’s room for improvement. We understand that supporting employee development and fostering trust will only make our services to the public that much stronger.

Improving employee engagement is an ongoing priority for El Paso County. When our workforce feels connected, empowered, and confident in their leadership, they are better equipped to meet the challenges of public service. By investing in our employees’ growth, building trust, and ensuring that they feel appreciated, we are also investing in better outcomes for our citizens. Our goal is to make El Paso County a place where both employees and citizens thrive.
