January 20, 2026 – El Paso County is proud to join communities across the state in commemorating the upcoming America 250 – Colorado 150 anniversaries, recognizing 250 years of American independence and 150 years of Colorado statehood. These dual anniversaries present a rare opportunity to observe combined milestones, uniting Coloradans and Americans to reflect on foundational ideals.

Through a coordinated, countywide effort, El Paso County is supporting educational resources, community partnerships, and public engagement opportunities that honor the region’s history while encouraging residents to reflect on the values, people, and events that shaped both the nation and the State of Colorado.

The America 250 – Colorado 150 initiative provides an opportunity to highlight El Paso County’s unique role in Colorado history, from early settlement and military presence to innovation, civic leadership, and community growth. County departments are working collaboratively to share historical content, promote local events, and connect residents with meaningful ways to celebrate.

“America 250 and Colorado 150 give us a rare opportunity to reflect on the foundational ideals that built this nation—liberty, individual rights, rugged individualism, and a deep commitment to freedom,” said Commissioner Carrie Geitner, Chair of the El Paso County Board of County Commissioners. “For 250 years, Americans have been willing to stand up and sacrifice to protect these principles, and El Paso County has proudly carried that legacy forward since Colorado’s earliest days. As we commemorate these milestones, we encourage our community to participate in local events and educational opportunities that celebrate our shared history and strengthen civic pride across El Paso County.”

The 2026 El Paso County Fair will also join in the celebration. This year’s theme, United We Celebrate, is a nod to the sesquisemiquincentennial and will feature all the activities, fun, and food that residents have come to expect from this longstanding celebration of our western heritage. Additionally, 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of Bear Creek Nature Center, which will offer special programming and activities throughout the year.

To support these efforts, El Paso County has launched a dedicated webpage serving as a centralized hub for anniversary-related information. The page includes a list of associated anniversaries, information on countywide initiatives, and helpful links to various celebration pages and events. Many of these resources offer residents opportunities to get involved around the community throughout the year.

The County’s participation ensures residents of all ages have access to meaningful opportunities to engage in local history, celebrate shared milestones, and take part in commemorative events throughout the year.

Residents are encouraged to explore the America 250 – Colorado 150 webpage and check back regularly as new resources and opportunities are added.
