November 21, 2024 – El Paso County officials, project team members, and community stakeholders gathered today to celebrate the completion of the $9.9 million Rex and Meridian Roads Intersection Improvements Project. Completed in just 10 months, this major infrastructure initiative delivers crucial safety and capacity enhancements to one of the county’s rapidly growing areas.
“This project represents our commitment to ensuring safe and efficient transportation infrastructure for our residents,” said El Paso County Commissioner Carrie Geitner. “The improvements we’re celebrating today will significantly enhance traffic flow, reduce delays, and most importantly, make this intersection safer for everyone who travels through this area.”
The comprehensive improvements include:
- Installation of a new traffic signal system
- Widening of Meridian Road to four lanes
- Addition of turn lanes on Rex Road
- Full-depth reconstruction of both Rex and Meridian roads
- Enhanced stormwater management systems
- Improved sight distances through terrain modification
- Enhanced shoulders and roadside ditches
El Paso County Engineer Josh Palmer highlighted the collaborative effort that made the project possible. “This success story is the result of outstanding teamwork between county staff, our contractors, utility providers, and most importantly, our patient and supportive community members.”
El Paso County Project Engineer Dan Gerhard emphasized the technical achievements of the project, noting that the improvements will significantly reduce delays for drivers on Rex Road while enhancing safety through better sight lines and modern traffic control systems.
ESI Contractor Project Manager Jack Suder acknowledged the dedication of the construction crews who worked diligently to complete the project while maintaining access for local traffic and emergency responders throughout the construction period.
The project, largely funded through El Paso County’s Road Impact Fee funds, addresses the growing traffic demands in the Falcon area while providing critical safety improvements for emergency responders serving the community. The new configuration allows for smoother traffic flow and improved response times for emergency vehicles.
The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in El Paso County’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure improvement and public safety. The enhanced intersection will serve the community’s transportation needs for years to come while accommodating future growth in the area.
