Commissioners provided final direction to staff on the 2020 El Paso County Budget during the regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, November 14, 2019. The proposed budget prioritizes ongoing County infrastructure and road maintenance, as well as increased staffing for community programs, such as Pretrial and Veterans Services.

“With the budget constraints for 2020, I am pleased we were able to still focus on prioritizing critical needs while strengthening existing services,” said El Paso County Commissioner Mark Waller. “There isn’t a department or agency that feels they got everything they need to accomplish the mission, but I feel confident every single one of those agencies will continue to serve El Paso County citizens well, even if it means doing more with less.”

Chief Financial Officer Sherri Cassidy provided the Board of County Commissioners with revised discretionary revenue estimates. Of those available funds, the Commissioners agreed to allocate $345,000 for high impact road projects and the other $10,000 for census outreach in rural communities.

“There is a serious need for improvements to our transportation infrastructure, said Executive Director of Public Works Scot Cuthbertson. “I am grateful to the Commissioners for additional funding, which we plan to put towards reclamation materials to improve our unpaved roads and critical road repair projects.”

The Board of El Paso County Commissioners will adopt the 2020 El Paso County Budget during the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, December 10, 2019.
